about

“Black Beam” is the debut instrumental single from the Philly-based folktronic collective ZRNA. Built upon a skeletal synth arpeggio and a gutted drone, the synth and saxophone dialogue around a booming 2-2-3-2 beat. When the full beat finally drops, nearly halfway through the song, we get 808s, skittering jazz drumming, and a despairing, defiant melody played by synth and sax in unison. “Black Beam” creates its own stillness, its own dark gravity and scintillations, within a cavern of dust and debris. This is the dub side of our times - a cleansing trance, a ritualistic hearing of emptiness, and we are called to enact something we are only beginning to understand.
